History of
the church building
The
earliest parts of the church date back to the 12th century but it is
likely that there was earlier occupation of the site. Over the
centuries, there has been extensive development.
The main
feature of the nave is the fine 15th/16th century wagon roof with over
30 different designs of carved oak bosses, including the arms of the
Percy, Beaufort and Neville families. The two tie beams may date from
the 13th century.
The spire,
120 feet high, was added to the tower in the 15th century. The eight
sides are covered with wooden shingles.
The church
building is open between 10am and 4pm (3:30pm in winter) on Mondays and
Wednesdays; do come inside and look around.
